Beloved Island: Franklin & Eleanor and the Legacy of Campobello
Published in Paperback by Paul S. Eriksson (September, 2002)
Average review score:

The daily lives of Franklin and Eleanor RooseveltBeloved Island: Franklin & Eleanor And The Legacy Of Campobello by Jonas Klein is a touching, memorable, biographical portrayal of two genuinely great figures of 20th Century American history. Here presented are the daily lives of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, and how their summer home on Campobello Island influenced them, and rounds out an impressive and painstaking recreation of their personal experiences with anecdotes, personal letters, and the memories of aides, family, and friends. A welcome and much appreciated contribution to the growing library of literature dedicated to the life, thought, and achievements of this politically and socially influential (and often controversial) couple, Beloved Island is an informative and insightful study of the often-hidden inner side of these two remarkable American leaders.

A book to treasure!I am surprised to see that I'm doing the first review on this book! I checked this book out from the library to read to my children, and it is one of the most memorable biographies we have read together. This beautiful book is the story of Benjamin Franklin's interesting and inspiring life, with many full page illustrations. It includes many of his sayings throughout the book. I can't wait to own it!

Important Historical RecordBenjamin Franklin helped the woman's movement of the 18th century. Through the use of a hoax, Franklin helped to spread the word of woman's treatment by the justice system. By creating a person, Polly Baker, a person that exsisted only on paper; he was able to give the people a champion for women's rights. This book is fascinating as well as an important historical record.

Benjamin Franklin and His Enemies
Published in Paperback by University of California Press (June, 1998)
Average review score:

Extraordinary! This is an extraordinary literary work of history and biography. Middlekauff stikes the right balance here between erudition and urbanity. Seeing Benjamin Franklin through the eyes of his enemies reveals not just the complicated character of the man but also the complicated moment in history that he occupied. I highly recommend this book!

Benjamin Franklin: the First Civilized American
Published in Textbook Binding by West Richard (June, 1980)
Average review score:

The best biography I've ever read!I was bitten with the Founding Fathers bug a short while ago and had an urge to read a book on an early American luminary. I was browsing through my library's Founding Fathers book inventory when I somewhat randomly grabbed this Ben Franklin biography. Wow! What a treat. Combine Ben Franklin's dry wit with the author's OWN sense of humor and you have a historical biography which isn't boring or dull but will actually have you cracking up in laughter! There were several occassions when I had to practically put the book down and laugh out loud. What a hoot! I hope Phillips Russell wrote other biographies because I am now a true fan.

Benjamin Franklin: A Man With Many Jobs (Rookie Biographies)
Published in Paperback by Children's Book Press (May, 1900)
Average review score:

With a special touch!I am a 3. grade teacher and when I was reading this book to my class, they all were fascinated by it. Benjamin Franklin was no longer a "stranger", he became alive with this book - he became somebody you know and understand a little bit better with every page. The illustrations are great and brought up many questions from my students.

Billy Watson's Croker Sack
Published in Paperback by University of Georgia Press (March, 1998)
Average review score:

A Flawless Collection of EssaysBilly Watson's Croker Sack is candid and clear and Mr. Burroughs himself is an expert in syntax. The tales are honest and human without being sentimental. This is the type of book you listen to carefully, sounding out words, hearing them together. The style is self-effacing in some ways - I reread sentences, surprised the second time by their beauty, but more surprised that I didn't notice them as much the first time, the prose is so natural. And this is, perhaps, the best quality of the collection - that it so naturally evokes eloquence. I recommend this collection to anyone fascinated by words and sentences, but more to those seeking well-told yarns about the things that make us most human.
